The Age of Shadows(2016):
This spy versus spy set in Japanese occupied Korea has almost as many crosses and double crosses as it has characters. The action is riveting. The opulance of the offices used by the Japanese officials is truly a sight.
Good line: "He and I are just bait thrown by fishermen, how could we become friends?"

Gentleman's Agreement(1947):
Good, but its points could have been sharper. Though I suppose for 1947 America it was sharp as was allowed. It's based on the novel Gentleman's Agreement by Laura Z. Hobson. Gregory Peck and Dean Stockwell(eleven years old here) are a convincing father and son duo. Celeste Holm is a powerful scene stealer. John Garfield is excellent. It's a shame he died so young.
Some interesting details about several of the actors and crew in relation to the McCarthy hearings get covered in the extra features on the DVD. A number of them were subsequently blacklisted.
Another good movie about anti-semitism is Focus(2001). It has many similarities to Gentleman's Agreement though it is based on a different literary work[Focus by Arthur Miller].
Focus is closer to my experience. Unlike Gregory Peck's character, I never volunteered to be mistaken for Jewish. The bigotry I've had to face has been far less subtle than that which comes from the white gloved, country club frequenting WASPs of Gentleman's Agreement. I'm still facing it. It lives next door to me.
Gentleman's Agreement: A polite euphemism for "You had better not move into this shitty white supremacist enclave if you know what's good for you.", and if you own property in said white enclave: "You had better not rent or sell to any minority types if you know what's good for you.".
If you break that unwritten, unspoken agreement, you might have to deal with some white gutter ape in a Confederate flag wife beater shirt screaming about how he is going to beat your "miserable Jew bitch ass", whenever you set foot outside of your house. That's the short version of why I live in constant fear for my life in a small town in Pennsylvania.
In a way, I wish they'd be even more overt. They should just put up a giant fucking billboard that declares their shithole of a town for WASPs only. I never would have bought a house here if I had known. The cops and courts have done very little to mitigate the situation. Why would they? It's our fault for breaking their Gentleman's Agreement.
The few that are nice to us are fond of using the phrase "you people", when speaking to us. As in: "I don't have a problem with you people living here.". It's 2019, and this Nazi pigshit is still a thing.
Now, as to what it is about me that causes some people to decide for me that I'm Jewish, it remains a mystery to me. I think it would be like trying to comprehend the logic of a rabid skunk.

Avengers: Endgame(2019):
I've finally seen it. I'm satisfied. The grand battle was grand indeed. They did an excellent job of going back in time, making old actors look young again. 1970s Stan Lee with hot car and hot lady is my favorite Stan Lee cameo now.
Is that a Tesseract in Loki's pocket, or is he just happy to see you? That is a Tesseract in his pocket, and he is happy to see you.

How To Draw A Bunny: A Ray Johnson Portrait(2002):
I saw this for the first time in 2006. It was good to see the art again. Probably not the best choice for me given my current level of depression...Nothing cheers a person up like a documentary about an artist/performance artist whose last piece of performance art was his suicide.
I'm sorry if that spoiled it for anyone.
My Ray Johnson story: One afternoon in some summer of my single digit age youth, my family and I were gathered for dinner around my grandparents' dining room table. My grandfather would often read the newspaper, and open his mail during dinner. On one occasion, he opened an envelope, and inside it was this strange piece of art...black with big eyes, a sort of animal shape, and it had a name written on it. I don't remember whose name it was. I do remember my grandfather complaining loudly that it didn't look anything like the person whose name it bore. He held it up and showed it to everyone at the table. He questioned whether it were some kind of joke. He decided it was a joke, and a bad one at that. My dad urged him to keep it. I asked if I could have it. He reminded us it was sent to him, and he would do as he pleased with it. He then tore it into pieces, and threw it away.

The Black Adder(1983):
I'm strolling down memory lane with this one. My favorite episode is The Queen of Spain's Beard, because Miriam Margolyes and Jim Broadbent are just so fantastic. Runner up: The Archbishop episode. Those two episodes are also the ones that I had the best recollection of from when I first saw the series back in the 1990s. Honestly, that first time was more of an over the shoulder half-assed watch as I was making out with my boyfriend, who usually had PBS on in the background.
I'm not sure which is more jaw-dropping Brian Blessed's enormous hair, or Black Adder's "Black Russian" codpiece.

Kim(1950):
Three years after Gentleman's Agreement, Dean Stockwell stars with Errol Flynn in this exotic adventure set in 1885 India. A panhandling orphan makes a few lucky connections, which send him on a journey where he discovers his true heritage, and becomes versed in the ways of espionage.
Two movies with the same young star in one list is purely coincidental, but while I'm here, it's astonishing that Dean Stockwell got pushed into supporting roles as he matured, because he clearly had what it takes to be a great lead actor.

The Golden Lotus: Love and Desire(1991):
Starts out as a softcore porn movie, but then tries to be a straight drama. The former isn't terrible, but the latter is. This story of wives and concubines in jealous competition for one powerful man gets around in Chinese cinema. Other movies do it better, though not as a softcore flick. Raise the Red Lantern(1991) is one of them. I recommend solving the problem by renting Raise the Red Lantern, and viewing some actual porn(in no particular order).
